FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

How to select the best style of chandelier for a space?

It is best to determine first what the style of your space is as well as the dining room table shape/direction. Decide on the overall feel of the home for the style choice: formal homes go with glass beads, brass or crystal. For a coastal, casual home try a driftwood, seashell or wood piece. For modern coastal, go with a clean-lined linear pendant style or polished nickel in finish.

How do you determine the best size chandelier for a dining table?

You want the chandelier to be a focal point but not overwhelm the space. If a dining room is 15' x 20', then the diameter of your chandelier should be in the neighborhood of about 35 inches. For the clearance in the dining room, another guide is that the chandelier should be 1/2 to 3/4 inches the width of the dining table as to not over-power the space. A linear chandelier looks best with a rectangular table and an oval or circular chandelier looks good with a round table. In order to determine the height of the chandelier, it is important to take into account the over all scale of the room and hang it allowing a clearance of 30 -32 inches above the dining table.

Why choose a chandelier?

Coastal Chandeliers bring drama and distinction to your coastal style home. Incorporating beautiful, unique chandeliers and hanging lights in your entry, dining room kitchen and master bedroom will make a statement, add warmth and define each space. The goal is to have lighting that blends perfectly with your coastal style home decor while creating just the right mood for relaxed evenings far from demands of the day. And don't forget - always add a dimmer switch!

What are some of the materials used to make a chandelier interesting or coastal?

Materials such as driftwood, copper, iron and rope will bring an earthy natural feel to the space while adding texture, dimension and drama.  We have ceiling mount lights that consist of a collection of old and new made from natural materials including fishnet, bamboo, copper, rain forest vines and jute. Finally, the most coastal combination would be the hanging lights made from authentic shells, sea glass, nautical rope, driftwood and beads. Any material you select will come in a variety of shapes (pear, bell, halo, waterfall -to name a few) and offer different amounts of light to illuminate the space.

Does chandelier weight impact anything and why should I be aware of the weight?

Yes. The weight of a chandelier can impact the wiring box that is in the ceiling. At times, chandeliers are heavier than other light fixtures - especially crystal chandeliers.  The wire box is usually rated to hold a light fixture that weighs up to 150 pounds. If your chandelier weighs more than that, it will require special mounting hardware that should be supplied with it. Please ask if you are unsure. Most of the shell, rope, wood bead and other coastal chandeliers are not very heavy.

When a chandelier has delicate pieces like Capiz shells - how does it ship?

At times, chandeliers with small pieces or strands may have the strands ship un-installed to protect it during shipping and handling. When it arrives, you will need to read the directions and add the strings into the layer prior to hanging.

What if my ceiling is extremely high and I need more chain or rod?

Most of our chandeliers have long chains or rods to accommodate various, but typical ceiling heights. When more than 6'-8' are needed, you can order extra matching chains or rods for a minimal fee. Please inquire upon ordering.

Does the shape of a dining room chandelier need to pair with the table?

A linear fixture or linear multi-pendant light fixture make sense over a long, farmhouse style rectangular table. For a round table, you may not want a linear light, but maybe a halo or wreath style light to reflect the table shape.  Two smaller round lights would look nice over a rectangular table as well as a standard round light. Oval tables pair well with either style, but preferably round is best or even oval.
